Operating Parameter Optimization of Small Downhole Oil-Water Separator Based on the Response Surface Method

Abstract:The oil-water separator can effectively separate oil-water mixture,and also improve production efficiency,alleviate environmental pollution,and reduce production costs.To further improve the eficiency of the oil-water separator and reduce the overflow pressure loss, taking a smalldownhole oil-water separator as an example,basedon the response surface method,the mathematical relations between three operating parameters(oil phase density,treatment capacity and diversion ratio)and separation eficiency or pressure drop were established, the separate influence of oil phase density,treatment capacity and diversion ratio on separation eficiencyand pressure drop wasanalyzed,and their interactive relationships were discussed.Finally,the optimal combination of operating parameters was determined,and the response model was verified.The results show thatthe determination coefficient for linear regression R2 is O.972 9 and O. 991 1 respectively in variance analysis and significance test, indicating a good correlation of the response model. When the oil phase density is 800kg/m3 ,the incoming fluid treatment capacity is 1.413m3/h , and the diversion ratio is 39.419% ,the separation effect is optimal. The separation efficiency increases from 79.56% to 96.37% after optimization of operating parameters. The volume fraction of theoil phase near the undertow of the separatoris obviously reduced after optimization,and that near the overflow (oil phase outlet)is increased by 5 percentage points.The research results and the proposed method provide guidance for the structural optimization and field application of downhole oil-water separators.
