Effect of laser cladding spot size on microstructure and properties of iron-based coatings

Abstract:Three types of iron-based alloy coatings were prepared on the surface of 45 steel by laser cladding technology with varying spot sizes. The effects of spot sizes on the phase composition, microstructure, microhardness, and wear resistance of the coatings were studied. The results show that coatings with different spot sizes can be successfully produced within an optimized process range. The three iron-based alloy coatings are primarily composed of body-centered cubic α-Fe and Fe-Cr(Ni) solid solutions,with spot size having a minimal effect on the phase composition. Compared to the coatings produced with larger spot sizes (L1-L3),those with smaller spot sizes (S1-S3)exhibit a finer microstructure. The hardness of all three types of iron-based alloy coatings is over 2. 5 times greater than that of the substrate,with the small spot coatings showing superior hardness compared to the large spot coatings. In terms of wear resistance, all coatings demonstrate a reduction in wear volume by more than 70% compared to the substrate. Specifically, the wear volume and friction coefficient of the large-spot laser cladding coatings are higher than those of the small-spot coatings. The coating S3 exhibits the best wear resistance,with a wear volume reduction of 97.7% compared to the substrate and a friction coefficient of only 65% of that of the substrate.
