[Abstract]Asthefieldoforal pathologyhasevolved，thenomenclatureand clasificationoforalmucosaldiseases witha remarkable riskof malignant transformation have undergoneseveral modifications.In 2oo5，the WorldHealth Or
ganization （WHO） introduced the concept of oral potentiallymalignant disorders（OPMDs）asan alternative to theterms fororal precancerouslesionsand precancerous conditions.In the consensusreport by theWHO CollaboratingCenterforOralCancerof2021，OPMDisdefined as“anyoral mucosal abnormalitythatisassociatedwith astatistically increased risk of developing oral cancer.” This definition encompasses a range of conditions， in
cludingoral leukoplakia，oral submucous fibrosis，proliferative verrucous leukoplakia，oralichenplanus，andotherlesions.Inlightoftecomplexetiologyunclearpathogenesis，andcarcinogenesisofOPDs，earlyandprecisediagosis andtreatmentcancontribute tothe secondary prevention oforalcancer.For this reason，thisreview，whichaims toprovidea basis forthe precise clinical diagnosisofOPMDs，was performed.Itsaim wasachieved byreviewing thehistorical evolutionandresearch progressofthe nomenclature，clasification，and histopathological diagnosticcriteriaofOPMDs.
