The Origin， Lexicalization， and Dictionary Inclusion of

“句稽"（GouJi），“勾稽"（GouJi），and“鉤稽"（GouJi） ZHANG Chengjin，LIU Fan （School of Literal Arts，NanJing Audit University，NanJing ， China）

Abstract： In the history of Chinese language，“句稽"（GouJi），“勾稽"（GouJi），and“鉤稽"（GouJi）represent three different writings of the same term. The paper discusses the origin and evolutionary process of the meaning of“句稽（勾稽/鉤稽）”.The initial consecutive use of“句（勾）”and“稽”originated in the Tang Dynasty ，which was the result of a synonymous compounding of the near-synonymous verbs“ 句（勾）”and “ 稽”according to the word-formation rules.It is a synchronic lexicalization phenomenon.“句稽"and“勾稽” formed in the Tang Dynasty， while“鉤稽” emerged in the Song Dynasty. In the history of Chinese language， “句稽（勾稽/鉤稽）”has three meanings，with a derivative relationship as follows：“inspection and supervision” $$ “ account verification” $$ “l(fā)iterature research”.In modern Chinese，the meaning of “inspection and supervision”is hardly used; the meaning of“account verification” is only used in the accounting term“勾（鉤）稽 relationship";and the meaning of“l(fā)iterature research” has become the relatively common one.The modern Chinese language reference books do not include“句稽”，making“鉤稽”the standard form and“勾稽”a variant on the basis of the degree of common usage among these three graphical forms.
