The Effects of Drying Methods and Drying Time on the Nutritional Quality and Chlorophyll Content of Natural Grassland Forage

Abstract:This study aimed to investigate the effects ofvarious drying times and methods on the nutritional quality and chlorophyll contents of natural grassland forage during the drying process.The experimental materials comprised natural forage sourced from a representative area in Xilin Gol League, Inner Mongolia. Two drying methods were implemented: shade drying and natural drying. Samples were collcted at intervals of 0h , 12h , 24h , 36h , 48h ! 60h ,and 72h .The chlorophyll contents(including chlorophyll a,chlorophyll b,and total chlorophyll)and nutritional quality of the forage were analyzed under these varying conditions.Results indicated that forages dried using the shade method exhibited significantly higher levels of chlorophyll,dry mater (DM),and crude protein(CP)compared to those dried naturally. Furthermore,as drying time increased,a downward trend was observed in chlorophylla,chlorophyll b,total chlorophyll,DM,and CP,while the concentrations of acid detergent fiber(ADF)and neutral detergent fiber(NDF)increased.The interaction between drying time and method significantly influenced both chlorophyllcontents and nutritional quality ( P< O.05).In conclusion,comprehensive analysis indicates that,under favorableconditions,shadedrying is recommended as the optimal method for hay preparation in the typical grasslands of Xilin Gol League.
