Research on Cuttings Transport Performance of Circulating ValveCleanerBasedonCFD-DEM

Abstract: In the processof drilling,inefficient drill cuttings transport may lead toan increase inannular cuttings concentration and equivalent circulating density(ECD),thereby causing some problems such as tool wear and lost circulation.To solve these problems,anew type of borehole annulus circulating valve cleaner was developed.Basedonthe H-B non-Newtonian fluid model,a numerical model for evaluating the cutings transport performance of multi-stage borehole annulus circulating valve cleaner was built by using the coupled CFD-DEM calculation method.The effctsof the number of nozzles,nozzle diameter,nozzleangle and drillpipe rotation speed on thecuttings transport performance of the circulating valve cleaner were analyzed.The results show that increasing thediameterandnumber ofnozles orraising the drillpipe rotation speed leads to an increase in theconcentration of cuttings in annulusanda significant decrease in the cutings transport ratio(CTR).When the numberof nozzles is 3 and the nozzle diameter is 10mm ,the cuttings transport performance is the best. As the nozzle angle increases,the CTR value increases and then decreases. When the nozzle angle is 30° , the CTR value is the highest,indicating the highest cutings transport efficiency.Invertical borehole,the rotationofthe circulating valve cleaner produces aswirling effect,whichmaycausethe spiral migrationof cutings,therebymaking cuttings retain longerinthe borehole to induceasignificantreductioninthecuttings transportefficiency.Thehighertherotational speed,the stronger the swirling effect,and the worse thecutings transport performane.Given the above optimal parameters,the borehole annulus flow rate increases by nearly 58% and the overall CTR increases by nearly 10% (20 after using the proposed circulating valve cleaner.The research conclusions are of great significance for improving the efficiency of annulus cuttings transport and ensuring efficient and safe oil and gas development.
